ANDREW Bowie has shattered any illusions that the UK is a Union of equals, according to Mhairi Black.

The Scottish Tory MP had urged Scots “to get used to” Westminster expanding its influence north of the Border, and claimed the Internal Market Bill would be “very, very good” for the country.

The legislation, dubbed a power grab by Holyrood ministers, has been voted down by MSPs, with only Douglas Ross’s party backing the proposals.

Black told The National that the Scottish Tories are now “completely isolated”.

The SNP shadow Scotland secretary said: "The Tories' law-breaking Internal Market Bill – backed by Scottish Tory MPs – will not only rob the devolved governments of powers over devolved matters and hoard them in Westminster, it will also signal a race to the bottom in food and environmental standards and damage our world-leading industries, including food and agriculture.

"Rather than standing up for Scotland's interests and industries and preventing the biggest power grab against the devolved Parliaments, the supine Scottish Tory MPs – led by Douglas Ross – are once again demonstrating their well-practised routine of simply following the wishes of their Westminster bosses no matter what.

"Just this week, the Scottish Parliament decisively rejected granting consent for the deeply damaging Bill and the unprecedented threat to the Scottish Parliament’s powers. The Scottish Tories are completely isolated.”

Black added that independence is now Scotland’s only exit route.

She continued: “Given the fact that the Tory Government are carrying on with this bill despite being explicitly refused consent by the Scottish Parliament, it only serves to further prove that this is not a partnership of equals and they have no real desire to work with the Scottish Parliament.

"It's clear that the only way to protect Scotland's Parliament and people is by becoming an independent country."
