Alison Hammond: Back to School (STV, 9pm)

IF you went to school in Britain, your history lessons probably at least touched on the Romans, Tudors, Victorians or the First World War. But it’s less likely that you were taught about the role that black figures played during those eras. This Morning’s Alison Hammond is going on a school trip with a difference as she uncovers some untold stories from the time periods and brings a new perspective to Britain’s past.

Boswell & Johnson’s Scottish Road Trip (Sky Arts, 9pm)

THIS three-part series follows comedian Frank Skinner and best-selling crime writer Denise Mina as they try to recreate a 1773 trip made by creator of the first great English dictionary, Samuel Johnson, and his young Scottish friend James Boswell to the Hebrides. The duo will tap into their longtime fascinations with the literary duo as they travel around the coast of Scotland via carriages, horses and boats. Frank and Denise will visit extraordinary sites and enjoy the majestic beauty of the Lowlands, Highlands and islands, discovering what has changed, and what has remained the same since the great 18th-century journey.

Life (BBC1, 9pm)

IT’S been three weeks since the events of the first episode – and they are all facing a choice about whether to carry on as normal or take a step into the unknown. Belle seems to be going for the latter as she arranges a night in with Dominic, but her niece Maya looks set to spoil her plans. David questions how well he really knows Rachel after meeting some of her old friends, Gail’s loyalty is tested, and Andy wonders if he can really stand by his commitment to Hannah.

Surgeons: At the Edge of Life (BBC2, 9pm)

THE medical documentary returns for a new series, and it begins with an extraordinary procedure as David Jenkins at Royal Papworth drains a patient’s body of blood to remove clots in her lungs. At Addenbrooke’s hospital, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Andrew Carrothers is also pushing at the boundaries of medical science with a complex operation intended to help patients whose pelvis and hip bones have been badly weakened by cancer to walk again.
