AN SNP MP has asked for an apology from Sky News after the broadcaster confused her with Margaret Ferrier, her colleague who breached coronavirus rules.

Ferrier faces calls to resign from the First Minister, Ian Blackford, her party colleagues and opposition MPs after travelling twice by train while Covid-positive.

The Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP travelled by train from Scotland to London despite suffering coronavirus symptoms, and even delivered a speech in the House of Commons that night.

Later she tested positive for Covid-19 and again boarded a train, this time travelling back up to Scotland.

People who experience coronavirus symptoms are required to self-isolate for 10 days, and members of their household for 14 days, unless they and everyone they live with receive a negative test.

Sky News has been covering the story but used a picture of North Ayrshire and Arran MP Patricia Gibson rather than Ferrier when discussing the shamed MP.

Gibson tweeted: “I assume you will be apologising for using my picture in this story?”

This morning Nicola Sturgeon called on Ferrier, who was a vocal critic of other coronavirus rule breakers like Dominic Cummings, to resign.

The SNP leader wrote online: “I’ve spoken to Margaret Ferrier and made clear my view that she should step down as an MP.

“I did so with a heavy heart - she is a friend & colleague - but her actions were dangerous & indefensible. I have no power to force an MP to resign but I hope she will do the right thing.”

Ferrier apologised for her actions yesterday evening, posting a statement to say her behaviour had been “wrong”.

She wrote: “I apologise unreservedly for breaching Covid-19 restrictions by travelling this week when I shouldn’t have.

“There is no excuse for my actions.”

Police Scotland and the Metropolitan Police have launched probes into the MP’s actions.
