The National:

IF there's one thing English MPs are good at, it's explaining what Scotland needs.

Ed Davey's done a grand job of it recently while north of the Border on his listening tour, ignoring the consistent polls in favour of independence and saying a federal UK is the way forward.

Keir Starmer's had an equally good crack at it of late, although he has at least conceded a pro-independence majority at Holyrood may be a mandate for something other than more Unionism.

Now, enter the illustrious MP of 10 months, Gary Sambrook.

One of the new Conservative crop who promised to “Get Brexit Done” and took seats last December as Labour’s “red wall” fell, Sambrook may be accused of being a single-issue candidate.

Anyone who thought that though would be gravely mistaken, as his confident explanation of devolution in the Commons today had even the SNP taking notes, maybe.

He explained: “[Devolution] is when you talk about taking powers from Brussels to the UK, given to the devolved administrations.”

He goes on: “But no, their [the SNP’s definition] is to send it right back over to Brussels and have no control over them whatsoever.”

Unsurprisingly, the MP struggles to be heard over the jeers as he continues on.

Next, he blames the EU for the removal of Quim Torra from office in Catalonia (Torra himself disagreed, saying Europe was “the only place” where his movement would find justice).
