The Great British Bake Off (C4, 8pm)
MAKE sure you have a cuppa at hand – and preferably something to dunk in it – for the second episode, as it’s biscuit week. Not that judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood will be dipping any of the bakers’ creations in their tea, as they are likely to be looking for crunch, taste and in, the showstopper, decoration. The hopefuls begin with the Signature challenge, before they tackle a tropical Technical. Finally, for the showstopper, they must create an elaborate table setting made entirely from biscuits.
Life (BBC1, 9pm)
DOCTOR Foster writer Mike Bartlett is back with a drama series – and he’s reunited with one of the stars of that series, Victoria Hamilton, who reprises her role of Anna, although now she’s a pilates teacher going by the name Belle. She might not be the only one hoping to make a fresh start, as the Manchester-set Life follows the residents of a large house which has been divided into four flats. As well as Belle, the inhabitants include Gail (Alison Steadman), who is married to Henry (Peter Davison), and David (Adrian Lester) whose relationship with wife Kelly (Rachael Stirling) is tested by Saira (Saira Choudhry).
All Creatures Great and Small (C5, 9pm)
IT’S the Darrowby Show, and James is thrilled that he’s going to be the Attending Vet. However, while he may see it as an honour, Siegfried and Tristan are all too pleased not to be involved and start taking bets on just how long their colleague will stick it out. After encountering Mr Foyle, the jobsworth head of the show, and the locals keen to bribe him to help them win the competitions, will James see the Farnons’ point?
Rankin’s 2020 (Sky Arts, 8pm)
THIS new series challenges the best amateur and professional photographers to document the year so far. Photographers have submitted a photo via Instagram using the handle @2020rankin, with the hashtag #2020rankin and the category – Family, Fun, Self, Beauty, Empathy or Nature – they are entering. In each of the six episodes, Scottish photographer Rankin will choose the best submissions with the help of celebrity guests, and also talk us through his own images.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
