A CORONAVIRUS outbreak among students in Dundee has spread to a second halls of residence.

One student at Abertay University's Meadowside Halls has tested positive for Covid-19.

The halls sit on the city's Bell Street, just 100 or so metres from the university's main campus.

The news comes while around 500 students are currently self-isolating in the city's Parker House, run by the private company iQ.

That student accommodation has seen 45 positive cases of Covid-19 to date.

Euan Lee, who was reportedly the first student to test positive at Parker House, has praised his university for the support and guidance they provided.

The Abertay student, who is originally from Edinburgh, told the Dundee Evening Telegraph: “I think it was inevitable that with so many young people coming together from all over that there was going to be a Covid-19 outbreak.

“It’s nobody’s fault and nobody has done anything wrong. It is just what it is.

“I’ll stay where I am and look forward to getting on to the campus as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, I am doing my uni work online and just getting on with it.”

One pub in the city, which sits close to both Parker House and Meadowside Halls, has closed as a precautionary measure after owners learned some of the Covid-positive students had been on the premises.

Sean Bennett, one of the co-owners of the Captain's Cabin in Dundee, said they had no plans to reopen "until it’s a valid option".

"We will test staff, do a deep clean and then see where we are,” he added.

The NHS’s public health team is issuing testing kits to all residents of Parker House and carrying out further contact tracing to ensure the outbreak is contained.
