AT THE beginning of the year lockdown birthdays were a somewhat unique experience.

Family and friends getting together via zoom to mark the big occasion. But as the months roll on and blend into one celebrating your birthday during these unusual times has become normality for so many of us.

Last week our household celebrated its first lockdown birthday. Normally we would go out for a meal at our favourite local restaurant but with South Lanarkshire grounded, we decided it would be easier to order in.

A close friend recommended we try Spice, an Indian Cuisine at Kirkton Park, East Kilbride. After eyeing up the menu for almost a week, it was finally time to order.

On Sunday, we were in the mood for some traditional Indian cooking. The phone operator was very helpful and advised us that home delivery wasn’t available at that time, but we could collect our take-away in 20 minutes time.

He was also very apologetic when he informed us that one of the dishes we wanted to order wasn’t available, but did his best to help us find a suitable alternative.

Normally I like to try new meals but for some reason I was craving a chicken korma and fried rice. My partner, who has a higher spice level than me, opted for the spicy chicken with a portion of chips – much to my disgust.

As it was a special occasion, I ordered a side portion of onion bhajis, spicy onions and poppadom’s. Within half-an-hour we were tucking into a delicious freshly cooked meal.

You could tell that our meal had been prepared that day and wasn’t defrosted in a microwave just before we arrived to collect it.

This was our first time at Spice, which also serves as a restaurant, and it is safe to say we will be back – would recommend to a friend.
