ALL 500 students in one halls of residence have been told to self-isolate following a suspected coronavirus outbreak there.
The NHS Tayside health board is looking into a single positive case and a small number of suspected cases linked to the Parker House accommodation in Dundee.
Dr Daniel Chandler, NHS Tayside's associate director of public health, said: "We know from outbreaks in other university settings across Scotland that the virus can spread very quickly in student accommodation.
"Therefore, as a precautionary measure, we are contacting all residents of Parker House and advising them to self-isolate immediately."
The students will no longer need to self-isolate once contact tracing has been completed, but anyone showing symptoms must book a test.
The principal of Abertay University, Professor Nigel Seaton, said the students at Parker House are being supported during self-isolation.
He went on: "The university already has enhanced cleaning and safety measures in place on campus, in line with national guidance, and the campus will remain open."
The news comes as the University of Glasgow said it was dealing with several Covid-19 cases in student residences.
Those affected are self-isolating and being supported, the university said.
It comes after 11 residents in student flats tested positive for coronavirus following a cluster outbreak linked to Edinburgh Napier.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
