NEIL Oliver has been mocked for a tweet about a spitfire plane that flew over Stirling to thank NHS workers.
The NHS Spitfire flew over Stirling Community Hospital at 10am yesterday morning, with the words “THANK U NHS”.
The plane also flew over hospitals including the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Perth Royal Infirmary, Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Aberdeen Royal infirmary, Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Neil Oliver tweeted: "Just watched a Spitfire in the long delirious burning blue over Stirling and only wish I might have been aboard, so as to reach out and maybe touch the face of God."

The tweet is a reference to popular poem High Flight by John Gillespie Magee Junior, which details the joy of flying.
The final lines state: "And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod/The high untrespassed sanctity of space,/Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
President Ronald Reagan quoted from the text in his broadcast to the nation following the Challenger shuttle disaster and it has also been used as a recruiting tool by the US Air Force.
Twitter users mocked the tweet, with some saying they weren't sure if the historian is being serious.

Now a question hangs in the air
Is Neil Oliver really this pretentious or is he parodying himself in the style of the pretentious fop many believe him to be? https://t.co/WJSBohx6Ij

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
