A GLASGOW university will serve as a "walk-through" Covid-19 test centre. 

Bosses at Glasgow Caledonian University have confirmed a building within the city centre campus will be transformed to help the Scottish Government's efforts to control the virus. 

Work will begin on the ARC, which is normally a sports hall, this week to prepare it to open on Friday. 

In an email to students, seen by The Glasgow Times, education chiefs wrote: "As you know, our University is making a substantial contribution to the nation’s emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This includes our nursing and paramedic students joining the frontline, providing PPE and other essential equipment, undertaking key research and our experts informing policy development. 

"Now, following a direct request for support from the Scottish Government, we can share with you that we have agreed to the Government using the ARC as a venue for a temporary, securely managed walk-through test centre, entirely segregated from the University’s own operations and one of eleven being established by the Government across Scotland. 

"The Government-run centre will be managed by clinicians and staffed by experts experienced in setting up and running other test centres in Scotland and around the UK. 

"Our support in providing the site is completely in keeping with our unique mission as the University for the Common Good and is a really important and vital way we can rise to the challenge our nation, city and community face.

"While maintaining the safety and wellbeing of those on campus, this centre will mean that anyone with coronavirus symptoms, including our students and staff, will be able to get a free swab test that takes less than a minute.

"Given our obligation to minimise the number of people on campus, we had no expectation of reopening the sports facilities in Trimester A."

GCU chiefs say they have been provided assurances from the Government the centre will not mean increased risk to staff and students.

The statement added: "All those attending the test centre will be provided with rules to minimise the risk to themselves and others, including avoiding contact with others whilst walking to and from the centre, not using public transport, wearing a face covering and maintaining clear social distancing."
