THE First Minister has announced 159 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon said that figure accounts for 1.9% of all those newly tested.

The provisional information indicates that 63 of these cases are in the Glasgow area, 29 are in Lothian, 19 are in Lanarksire and 10 are in Forth Valley.

The further 38 cases were spread across every mainland health board area – the second consecutive day where every area recorded at least one Covid-19 case.

There were seven more people in hospital with coronavirus, taking the total number to 274. No deaths were registered among patients who have tested positive for the virus within the last 28 days, meaning that total remains at 2499.

The First Minister gave some context to the figures, explaining that the rolling seven-day average now stands at 155 cases per day, up from 52 three weeks ago.

She added that the case positivity rate has also gone from around 1% to around or above 2%.

Sturgeon told viewers: “I hope you can see why the situation just now is a matter of concern for us.”

The announcement came as the National Records for Scotland revealed their latest weekly figures.

The body, which records deaths where coronavirus was confirmed or suspected, found that in the week up to September 6 there were two fatalities linked to the virus.

But NRS also said for the first time since the start of the pandemic Scotland had recorded no new coronavirus deaths in care homes last week.

Sturgeon said this “obviously is positive news but it is not cause for complacency”.
