WITH support for Scottish independence sitting between 53-55% in the latest opinion polls, Yessers set out to show why they back self-determination last night.

Yes supporters used people power to get #IMYesBecause trending, with every post using the hashtag explaining an individual’s reason for seeking Scottish independence.

There were many reasons cited for supporting independence – from Scots wanting to get the governments the country actually votes for, to those hoping to escape the constant talking-down of Scotland by politicians and Unionist media.

Here are 11 of the best tweets explaining why people support independence from the hashtag:

  • “#IMYesBecause I'm ashamed and embarrassed that the leaders in Westminster promised to respect Scotland's voice and then didn't when it really mattered. Dragging a country out of the world's most successful and democratic trade bloc *against its will* is a DISGRACE."
  • “#ImYesBecause there is zero argument against the basic fundamental fact that the decisions that impact Scotland would be better taken in Scotland, and to suggest this is not the case - and that we are somehow unique in the world in that regard - is absolutely absurd.”
  • “#IMYesBecause I’m sick & tired of being told Scots aren’t good enough. At high school any Scots words or accent were ‘uneducated’. Gods help you if you want to know Scottish history - except the haggis & Burns. Famous Scots? No such thing. Always- ALWAYS - 2nd best. No longer."
  • “#IMYesBecause I do not wish for nuclear weapons or a growing fleet of disposed and decaying nuclear submarines to be stored in Scotland.”
  • “#IMYesBecause Better Together failed to deliver on the promises they made in order to win in 2014. Remaining in the UK didn’t safeguard our EU membership and Scotland’s voice has been constantly ignored over Brexit. The status quo didn’t go away after 2014, things got worse.”
  • “#ImYesBecause is trending. I'm Yes because I want to live in a 21st century European nation, one which gets the governments it votes for, not in an 18th century tribute act having a profound post-imperial identity crisis.”
  • “#IMYesBecause I always have been. For all my life I’ve wanted independence for Scotland. I grew up during the Thatcher years, saw the greed, corruption & cronyism at the heart of the British establishment & wanted my country to take its seat at the international table as an equal”
  • “#IMYesBecause Scotland is big enough, smart enough and rich enough. Sick to the back teeth of having to beg for our money back from corrupt Tory governments we don’t choose. My kids deserve better than that. We can and will be a successful indy country. It’s time”
  • “#IMYesBecause I want Scotland to be rid of the WMD on the Clyde coast. I want to be a country of peace not war. I want to welcome migrants from all over the world to enrich our nation and culture. I don't want to be part of WM hostile environment."
  • “#IMYesBecause  I want Scotland to be an independent country, to govern itself for the betterment of its 5.5m Scots. Creating tailored policies relevant to our unique, inclusive & diverse culture.”
  • “I'm English but #IMYesBecause the will of Scottish folk has been overruled by uncaring, disrespectful Westminster #Brexit. I wanted Scotland to stay in UK in 2014 because I didn't want to be left alone with those Tories & I hoped we had a fairer future together within the EU”
