TWO pupils at separate Glasgow schools have contracted coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

St Ninian's Primary and Glasgow Academy have both announced positive cases among their students.

The latter, a high school in the west end, has now begun the Test and Protect procedure, with any contacts close to the pupil to be identified and asked to self-isolate for two weeks.

At the former, also in the west end, have received a letter from the NHS, confirming that the test and protect team are carrying out Covid-19 contact tracing.

There is currently no indication of any in-school transmission at either institution.

A spokesman for The Glasgow Academy said: “We are aware of one positive test in our community. The route of transmission is outside of the school community and Test and Protect procedures are underway. There is currently no indication of any in-school transmission.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said of the St Ninian’s case: "The school is working closely with our public health colleagues who’ve confirmed that robust control measures are in place at the school, and there is currently no evidence of transmission within the school itself.

“The test and protect team has contacted any families who’s child needs to self-isolate as a precaution for 14 days and the school will be organising home learning during this period.

“A public health letter of reassurance has been sent to all families with information and advice.”

Meanwhile, another seven schools within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board have begun contact tracing.

Dr Linda de Caestecker, director of public health, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, commented: “To control the spread of the virus it is essential that anyone contacted by test and protect follows the directions given including self-isolation.

"Anyone who may have been exposed is being given appropriate advice.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of continuing with the general measures to minimise the risk of Covid-19 to themselves and to others.

"These include social distancing, regular handwashing, and being vigilant for symptoms. Anyone with symptoms should immediately self-isolate and seek a test.”
