The National:

DOUGLAS Ross is off to a flyer as the new leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionists.

On his first day, he admitted he had absolutely no chance of success at next year’s Holyrood election.

He’s also been accused of telling porkies about indyref2 and a plot to oust Jackson Carlaw, as well as being caught up in an embarrassing mix-up over army testing sites in Aberdeen.

The arch-Unionist has continued his run of questionable moves by tweeting support for Pakistani independence on the 73rd anniversary of the day the country established its sovereignty from British rule.

Social media users sensed a slight contradiction in the Moray MP’s position.

One asked: “So, what we're saying here, is that independence is a great thing for other countries, just not our own?”

Another replied: “While I equally send a message of happy Independence Day to our friends celebrating in Pakistan and in Scotland, Douglas Ross clearly does not agree with Independence so his message is a bit strange … to say the least.”

Others put the point across in more straightforward terms.

Twitter user Peter McMahon raised another potential issue for Ross.

Some simply accused the Scottish Tory leader of “trolling”.

Whatever his motive, the Moray MP succeeded in further exposing his party’s hypocrisy on independence.
