1 Covid-19 has forced the cancellation of Edinburgh’s festivals ... but it hasn’t dimmed the spirit of those wanting to make art.

My Light Shines On is a series of online events under the Edinburgh International Festival banner designed as an act of optimism and solidarity. Last night, at the start of what would have been the opening weekend of the 2020 festival season, a range of events started streaming and you can watch them until August 28. The huge range of events includes a celebration of the Festival City, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Piano Concert Number 2 and an Evening With Scottish Ballet, as well as collaborations with other Edinburgh festivals. All details can be found at www.eif.co.uk/whats-on. This is one light that will never go out.

2 Displaying a similar indomitable spirit, the Edinburgh Fringe is offering what it describes as a reimagined 2020 event, featuring contributions from “hundreds of artist and venue streams to a weekly digital cabaret and festival favourites from your front room”. There are way too many events available online to list here ..get The Skinny at edfringe.com.

5 Elton John: Due to Covid and the postponed Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour, Elton is staging a one-man show. He walks on to the oldest stage he has ever played, Ephesus in Turkey (built circa 200 BC) and invites the audience to join him in one of the most intimate performances he has ever given. Everything about this concert is the opposite of what most people think of when they bring Elton to mind: his wardrobe is sedate, his staging virtually non-existent, no wild spectacles or platform shoes. Although the event is free to stream, watchers are invited to donate to the Elton John Aids and HIV Foundation. Available today for two weeks. www.youtube.com/channel/UCcd0tBtip8YzdTCUw3OVv_Q.
