A SECURITY officer in a “bad mood” due to a love split scarred a man for life in a nightclub.

Mark Whitelaw, 27, attacked Kevin Flynn with a glass bottle in Club Bliss in Kirkintilloch last November.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Whitelaw had been arguing with another man when Mr Flynn tried to be peacemaker.

Prosecutor Adele Macdonald said: “Whitelaw responded by striking Mr Flynn on the face with a bottle that he had in his hand.

“This caused a large cut in Mr Flynn’s face.”

The victim ended up needing 12 stitches for an eye wound.

Sean Flanagan, defending, told the court Whitelaw had recently split from his lover before the attack.

The lawyer added: “He was in a bad mood with people asking him about the relationship and he didn’t want to discuss it - this was his frame of mind.”

It was claimed he had spotted a friend initially arguing with Mr Flynn in the club toilets and reacted to that.

Whitelaw, also of Kirkintilloch, was on Thursday jailed for 18 months after he pled guilty to assaulting Mr Flynn to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Sheriff Sean Murphy QC told Whitelaw that it was an “appalling sequence of events.”

He said: “These attacks are all too common at public entertainment in the pubs and clubs in the west of Scotland.

“You were in a mood but none of the matters had anything to do with Kevin Flynn.

“You didn’t control matters even with your background as a steward.

“Your actions have resulted in life long injuries for someone who was not involved in your life.”
