BORIS Johnson is planning several visits to Scotland in a desperate bid to save the Union.
The Prime Minister will also chair crisis talks with the Cabinet after a recent surge in support for independence put Tory ministers into “panic mode”.
The Cabinet will discuss plans to prevent a landslide SNP victory at next year’s Holyrood election, according to reports. Recent surveys suggesting the party will win a comfortable majority, further strengthening the case for indyref2.
It comes as recent polling by Panelbase found 54% of Scots now back a Yes vote. This has reportedly spooked ministers.
One Cabinet minister told the Sunday Times: “Michael Gove is in panic mode about the Union and Boris is in irritated mode.”
On his visit to Scotland, the Prime Minister is expected to urge voters to stick with the Union by promising economic support.
“He will be popping up all over the UK in the next few weeks,” a Sunday Times source said.
The Tory party’s Scottish director, Mark McInnes, will present new polling data at the Cabinet meeting gathered by James Kanagasooriam, who oversaw the Scottish Conservative election campaign in 2016.
