POLICE are looking for a man who set a car on fire in the early hours of Thursday before fleeing the scene.

The "selfish and reckless" suspect poured an unknown liquid over a white Audi A3 in a residential street near the waterfront in Irvine, North Ayrshire.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the wilful fire raising that took place in Gottries Crescent at approximately 1.10am on Thursday.

The hooded suspect, believed to be a 5ft 10in man of average build, approached the vehicle from the direction of Beach Drive and ran off in that direction after setting fire to the car.

He is believed to have been wearing a hooded top with the hood up, dark shorts and dark trainers.

Detective Constable Ross Brierley, of Saltcoats CID, said: "Thankfully nobody has been injured as a result of this selfish and reckless act.

"We are appealing to members of the public who might have seen anyone matching this description acting suspiciously in the area to come forward.

"Although this incident happened in the early of hours of the morning, I would ask if anyone has any information that could assist with our investigation to get in touch with officers.

"I would also ask if anyone has possible dashcam or CCTV footage to contact police."

Potential witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 0193 of Thursday July 16.
