Aldi has pitched plans to establish nine new supermarkets for six different areas across the city.

The food retailer has been bidding on an expansion drive in recent years with an initial target of securing 1200 stores across the UK by 2025.

The supermarket chain is seeking to establish 19 new stores in Scotland.

Among them are bidding locations in Baillieston, Battlefield/Cathcart, Darnley/Pollok, Partick, Finnieston and Possil.

Three other stores on the outskirts of the city are planned at Stepps/Moodiesburn, Tannochside/Uddingston and Clarkston.

Ciaran Aldridge, National Property Director at Aldi UK, said: “Aldi is growing rapidly and we are welcoming around a million new customers into our stores every year.

“But there are also hundreds of towns across the UK where there is not an Aldi, meaning there are hundreds of thousands of people who can’t easily access the high quality, affordable food our customers love.

“We are willing to explore all opportunities, including developer-led schemes or existing retail units.”

Meanwhile, we reported in May of the food retailer's plans to  move into a retail park in Govan - creating 35 jobs in the area.

Plans were submitted to Glasgow City Council asking for permission to demolish units four and five at the Junction 24 Retail Park on Helen Street.

The planning application also asked that existing retail units one to three would be refurbished to create the supermarket.

The units under consideration for demolition are partly occupied by B&M and That Party Place.
