KIRSTEN Oswald has been named the SNP’s new deputy leader at Westminster.

The East Renfrewshire MP was elected unopposed after Kirsty Blackman stepped down.

Oswald tweeted: “Delighted to be new deputy leader of @theSNP group at Westminster. I look forward to working with @Ianblackford_MP and our great group of MPs, who provide the strong voice Scotland needs at a time when the case for independence has never been stronger.”

Blackman quit her party position last week, though she will be staying on as the MP for Aberdeen North.

In a candid statement, the politician – who has been Ian Blackford’s deputy for the last three years – said she had been struggling “with the impact that the lockdown” has taken on her mental health.

Speaking to The National, Oswald paid tribute to her colleague: “I’m really sorry that Kirsty is standing down. However, I completely respect her decision to do that.”
