NIGEL Farage has sparked anger by saying asylum seekers are to blame for the stabbing incident in Glasgow city centre.

Three people are believed to have been stabbed to death at Park Inn Hotel on West George Street, which is being used to house a large number of asylum seekers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Police Scotland said a male suspect was shot by an armed unit and that an officer is receiving treatment in hospital.

Farage tweeted: "Horrible tragedy in a Glasgow Hotel housing illegal immigrants. All over the UK, hotels are filling up with young men who are coming across the Channel every day. It is a massive risk to our wellbeing — yet the government does nothing."

Commentator Gerry Hassan described the former Ukip leader as "a miniature wannabe Trump" and pointed out that asylum seekers are not "illegal immigrants".

Glasgow councillor Mhairi Hunter said: "Nigel Farage does not give a damn about Glasgow & we should return the compliment & stop RTing him."

Miche Campbell, SNP councillor for Erskine and Inchinnan, said: "This is about the people of Glasgow, our nation being there for the community. This has nothing to do with Nigel Farage. Don't let his ignorance define us as people. Our humanity, care and strength comes from us as the people."

SNP MP Gavin Newlands urged people not to retweet or engage with Farage. He said: "Nigel Farage is despicable. Please don't retweet his bile or waste your time engaging him."

SNP councillor for Glasgow, Allan Casey, called the remarks "absolutely disgusting".

Labour councillor Eva Murray also responded, writing: "Away back under your rock Nigel and take your far-right bs with you.

"Refugees and Asylum Seekers will always be welcome in our city, unlike you."

Former Glasgow Labour MP Paul Sweeney added: "Asylum seekers aren't 'illegal immigrants'. They're people fleeing from the most brutal conditions in the world.

"Moving asylum seekers out of flats and concentrating them in hotels during lockdown has been been about saving money.

"Don't manipulate our city for your racist agenda."

MSP Anas Sarwar wrote: "Seriously Mr Farage. Don’t use a tragedy in our city to spread your fear and hatred.

"Glasgow has seen your kind before and always sent a united message- 'get yerself tae f...!'".

Others said Glasgow stands against what Farage represents.
