THE stabbing incident at a hotel in Glasgow is not a terror attack, the First Minister has confirmed.

Police Scotland said a male suspect was shot by an armed unit and that an officer is receiving treatment in hospital after the stabbing at Park Inn Hotel on West George Street on Friday afternoon.

It was previously reported that three people had died but this is unconfirmed.

Nicola Sturgeon said she became aware of the incident when she stepped off the podium having given the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus update.

Speaking on the BBC, she said she has had a brief conversation with Boris Johnson, who expressed his concern and sympathies.

Sturgeon added: “It’s been a dreadful afternoon for the city of Glasgow.

"The police have just confirmed that at this stage they are not treating this as a terrorist incident but of course there are still details yet to be determined."

Sturgeon said people’s thoughts should be with those injured.

She added: “All of us should bear them in mind, bear their families in mind and make sure we focus on all of the great things that bring our city together.”

The First Minister continued: “These are incidents that shock all of us and leave a sense of anxiety.

“The police through their professionalism and calm handling of this contained this situation relatively quickly.”

She said the actions taken ensured a “very, very serious incident didn’t become much worse”.
