TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to the victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, on the third anniversary of the London tower block blaze which claimed 72 lives.

In Scotland, Living Rent Glasgow expressed solidarity with the bereaved, survivors and wider community while making a plea for justice. Banners appeared across the city.

The organisers said in a statement: “From Glasgow to Grenfell, we stand united. From residents still trapped in buildings covered in flammable cladding, to tenants facing a new wave of Covid-19 evictions, and the ongoing struggles against racism, justice for Grenfell remain central to all those fighting to rebuild a broken housing system.”

In London, the mayor of the city, Sadiq Khan, paid tribute to those who died and voiced support for campaigners. He said: “I know the bereaved, survivors, residents and wider community are understandably frustrated at the lack of meaningful change and fearful that a similar tragedy could happen again. I, too, share their concerns.

“While struggling with their own personal grief and recovery, they have continued to campaign for building safety and are demanding change to keep others safe in their homes.

“I will continue to be relentless in holding those responsible to account and doing everything within my power to ensure the Grenfell community gets justice.”
