TRADE talks with Japan are to open over video call today as the UK seeks post-Brexit business.

Liz Truss will appear for the UK Government in negotiations with Motegi Toshimitsu, Japan’s minister for foreign affairs.

UK trade with Japan was worth more than £30 billion last year, according to official figures. It is claimed that Scotland, London

and the East Midlands would be the biggest beneficiaries of a free trade deal.

The Department for International Trade hopes such a deal will be in place in time for EU withdrawal at the end of the year.

Westminster has put around 100 negotiators to work on the deal.

UK International Trade Secretary Truss said: “As we kickstart trade talks, we aim to strike a comprehensive free trade agreement that goes further than the deal previously agreed with the EU, setting ambitious standards in areas such as digital trade.”
