Potentially over 1000 people have travelled to Glasgow Green for the Black Lives Matter demonstration.  

The event started at 12pm officially, although more than one thousand people are said to have congregated at the green. 

Many are wearing face masks and are practising social distancing amid calls from the Scottish Government to protest digitally due to the Coronavirus pandemic. 

The first speaker has paid respects to George Floyd and Sheku Bayoh, two black men who died in police custody.

They said: “next time you see anyone being racially discriminated against, you have to speak out. 
“This is just the start. Racism is a pandemic.” 

Many protesters are holding Black Lives Matter signs. 

Glasgow Times:

Eunice Olamide has been confirmed to speak later this afternoon. 

Organiser Barrington Reeves, 28 from Glasgow’s West End and owner of Glasgow design agency Too Gallup’s told The Glasgow Times: "We are trying to amplify BME voices, inviting young people to share their views and experiences.”

There is a police presence and the demonstrations are calm.

People have “taken the knee” for George Floyd, meaning they knelt down on one knee, and a minutes silence has been observed.
