A SCOTS family-of-three who have been stranded in lockdown in Pakistan for two months have been dealt another blow after their latest flight hope was cancelled.

Kerri-Anne (Keza) Khan, her Pakistani husband Danish and their teenage daughter Mollie were due to fly out from Karachi yesterday after The National highlighted their case earlier this month.

However, she told us: “The flight was cancelled because the Pakistan government extended the [international flights] ban until May 31.”

This is the fourth time the family, who live in Stirling, have seen their repatriation flight cancelled, and they say they have had no response to pleas for assistance from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

The family’s MP – SNP member Alyn Smith – said their case was a “catalogue of errors”, with issues still as frustrating now as they were weeks ago.

The Khans had travelled to Pakistan for a family wedding and short holiday, but the coronavirus pandemic saw the country go into lockdown on March 20, just before they were due to fly home, triggering their nightmare.

They managed to book a flight through their insurers, but that was cancelled when Pakistan extended its ban on international flights.

Khan said: “Islamabad and Lahore seem to be getting their flights away with no problems but the Karachi flights have been very problematic.”

Two other flights they managed to book seats on were also cancelled.

Khan said the first contact they had with the FCO was when they received a phone call from a woman there on April 27.

This was in response to a post they had made on the department’s social media feed.

“She said she didn’t know we were stuck here,” said Khan.

“She told us she was going to try and get us on the flight on April 30.”

Flight bookings for the FCO are being handled by a company called Corporate Travel Management (CTM) and there is a registration process.

However, before this can be completed the flight has to be paid for.

The family have already applied for an emergency loan and have spent heavily on their credit cards, but are still stranded.

“This is now the fourth commercial flight we have been booked on,” said Khan.

“The FCO information online is to book these at the first instance but every single one has been cancelled.

“Our insurance are not booking us any more flights until they know for sure there are flights running.”

Smith added: “This is appalling, and the lack of support from the FCO has been staggering, there’s no point having these helplines if nobody can reach them.

“Airlines in Pakistan have clearly been a shambles and it is high time we saw more evacuation flights given we can’t rely on the airlines.”

An FCO spokesperson said: “We know this is a difficult time for many British travellers abroad and our staff are working tirelessly to bring them home and support people who remain in the country – our High Commission team in Pakistan has been in regular contact with Ms Khan, and have flagged a number of opportunities for her to return to the UK.”
