ONE of Scotland’s best-known portrait artists is seeking your help to name a painting – and will award the winning suggestion with a print of the artwork.

Gerard M Burns, who has painted everyone from Nicola Sturgeon to Billy Connolly to Doddie Weir, announced the contest on his Twitter account today.

The painting features a dense woodland, with a young girl proudly standing in the centre of the frame holding a Saltire, flanked on each side by a wolf.

Burns said so far “the idea of ‘the forest’ is strong” for a title, but he wants to hear your suggestions.

He posted: “Wondered if you might be willing to help me out with some ideas for names for this painting? As before the ‘winning’ suggestion will receive a print of the painting.

“The idea of ‘the forest’ is strong here ... but keen to hear any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?”

Labour MSP Pauline McNeill replied to suggest: “First thought was Who Needs Shoes too frivolous-The Young Protector.”

And Farmers for Yes founder Jim Fairlie suggested “Rebirth, Raised by Wolves”.

Former presiding officer Tricia Marwick also responded to share a similar painting from the artist which she has on her wall, adding she bought it at auction to raise cash for former Catalan minister and St Andrews professor Clara Ponsati. She encouraged people to get in touch with Burns to buy a print.

To be in with a chance of winning the portrait simply reply to Burns on Twitter with your own suggestion.
