The National:

A WELSH Labour MP has deleted a tweet showing her singing Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again and waving a Union flag – beside lots of other people waving Union flags – after receiving backlash.

Carolyn Harris was preparing meals for NHS workers at Mecca Bingo HQ with volunteers when they stopped to film the performance. Posting the clip yesterday, she wrote: “Even in challenging circumstances, tomorrow is an important chance for us all to pay tribute to those who turned the tide of history in freedom’s favour.”

Some respondents were concerned by what they saw as a “Unionist” display coming amid a time of tense relations between Wales and the UK Government, while others felt there was not enough social distancing between those on the stage.

One Twitter user told her: “Welsh Labour should rebrand as Labour in Wales, because that’s exactly what it is. A Unionist party that puts the Union before Wales and the people who live here.”

Harris replied: “Get a life.”

Later this morning Harris deleted the post, saying: “Due to both @mecca and I receiving nasty and vile messages for showing respect for the heroes of #VEDay75 I have removed the tweet. I hope you feel very proud of yourselves as you really are appalling. #whathavewecometo”

Labour MP Gerald Jones replied defending Harris. He wrote: “Commemorating VE Day is a British event. It may be difficult for some with narrow nationalist views to comprehend but it is entirely possible and in fact very common for people to feel equally proud to be Welsh AND British, we don’t have to choose one over the other.”
