The National:

FORMER MP George Galloway has attacked The National for highlighting that school children in Dumfries and Galloway were asked to decorate with Union flags to mark the VE Day anniversary.

The Russia Today broadcaster pops up every now and then to pick fights with pro-independence Scots – back in January we reported that he was threatening to come back to Scotland to challenge Yessers, telling them they are “going to have to deal” with him in his Poundland-Liam-Neeson-in-Taken tone.

Now Galloway has called The National “deeply sick” for reporting on the story, in which a Scottish mum said she felt the homework task was “inappropriate”.

In the piece, the anonymous mum said she instead asked her children to decorate their garden with Saltires to mark the anniversary, adding she didn’t think “the words ‘Union Jack’ should be used as schools are supposed to be politically neutral”.

She went on to say her children “are of the opinion war shouldn’t be celebrated as they have heard a lot about it from my dad growing up”. She explained: “He felt it was holding it against Germans now as most of the soldiers are dead.”

If you ask us, we don’t see anything “deeply sick” about that – it is a reasonable opinion to have. And the mum still marked the historic date, just without the Union flags.

Responding to our Twitter account, which had posted the article earlier today, Galloway told us: “You are deeply sick people.

“Today we remember our joint victory over Hitler and the Nazis. Joint victory. From Sutherland through Sunderland to Suffolk and Southampton. I am ashamed that you claim to speak in our name. #VEDay2020.”
