THE First Minister has sent a message of “gratitude and respect” to those who fought for our freedoms during the Second World War.
Today is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marked the end of the Second World War for Europeans.
Nicola Sturgeon posted on Twitter this morning to mark the anniversary, writing: “On this the 75th anniversary of #VEDay we remember with gratitude and respect the men and women who fought for our freedoms. We owe so much to the #WW2 generation.”

Sturgeon said the public should draw inspiration from the “idealism” of that period and work towards a better future during these difficult times.
She went on: "We remember those who paid the ultimate price during the conflict, including the many innocent civilians on all sides.
"We also reflect on those who contributed to the war effort on the home front - and the enormous sacrifices they made.
"We should be inspired by that generation's bravery, and also by their idealism and their determination, following the war, to build a better country and indeed a better world."

Meanwhile, a revised programme of events in Scotland has been put together by charities, the Scottish Government, armed forces and media to mark VE Day during lockdown.
Large-scale events had been due to go ahead to mark the key milestone since the end of the war, but due to the coronavirus these have been cancelled.
Events marking the anniversary have mainly moved online, while old speeches from Churchill and other wartime figures will be televised later today.
