AN SNP MSP has told peers to “get a grip” after a House of Lords member complained the daily £162 payment to members is not sufficient.

The allowance was halved earlier this week as peers moved to working remotely during lockdown.

Even with this reduction, a Lords member collects more taxpayer cash in two days than a single person over the age of 25 on Universal Credit does in a month.

But Tory peer Lord Shinkwin, who claims he is not a “member of the privileged elite”, told the Telegraph that he and his colleagues have been “hung out to dry”.

SNP MSP Rona Mackay commented: “While millions of people across Scotland are worried about job losses and household income, it stinks of privilege and arrogance that these unelected Lords down in Westminster complain they aren’t paid enough.

“Despite the fact that nobody voted for them, these peers are in a job for life – earning more than a single person on Universal Credit receives in a month in just two days.

“It’s frankly sickening and a stain on our society that unaccountable members of the House of Lords are up in arms about earning £162-a-day just for turning up to work.

“These wealthy cronies, who have profited from their status to live the high-life at the taxpayers expense, don’t know they're born – they need to get a grip of themselves. “The sooner this undemocratic, out-of-touch institution is abolished for good, the better.”
