A RANGE of Scottish companies have answered the call for more equipment to help the NHS deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Babcock International Group is leading on the design and production of 10,000 ventilators.

As well as working on a new prototype, a team of Babcock engineers and specialists have set up a supply chain solution from scratch.

The team have worked night and day to set up the supply chain, and have enlisted a number of UK manufacturers to help with the assembly and production. Babcock, which has dockyards in Plymouth and Rosyth, is partnering with a leading medical equipment company in the production of the Zephyr Plus ventilators.

Babcock’s Zephyr Plus suppliers include Plexus, which is manufacturing and delivering ventilators produced at its Kelso plant to the National Health Service throughout the UK.

Raytheon UK will also be supplying ventillators manufactured at its site at Livingston.

Another Scottish company, JFD is bringing to market a new patient ventilator system to support global health systems combatting Covid-19.

Giovanni Corbetta, JFD managing director, said: “Our core purpose as a company is to protect lives.

“So, we are delighted that we have been able to use and transfer some of our experience into helping and hopefully alleviating some of the pressure that all the amazing health workers are under on the front line in battling this Covid-19 pandemic,’’ he added.

Scottish companies helping the coronavirus effort have been supported by Scottish Enterprise, which says it aims to ensure the full weight of Scotland’s integrated manufacturing support system is directed towards assisting their efforts where required.
