The National:

IT wasn't so long ago Andrew Neil was tweeting about this "Nationalist newspaper" after he was caught repeating debunked figures about Scotland's OECD performance.

At the time we gave Neil a little nudge in the form of a tweet linked to our fact-checking service which exposed the truth.

Did the broadcaster apologise for his error? Don't hold your breath...

He merely retweeted our post.

Fast forward a few months to our front page this morning which contained the story which everyone has been talking about today: claims that England was being prioritised over other parts of the UK when it came to the distribution of PPE.

What followed was an interview on BBC Scotland by forthright Scottish Government National Clinical Director Jason Leitch, who said the claims were untrue.

When the usual mob jumped on the front-page story, Neil couldn't wait to stick the boot in, and get a taste of revenge.

He tweeted: "Can The National now apologise for this front page? Tip: don’t hold your breath."

However, there was one problem for Neil. He got his facts wrong. Again.

By the time Neil had tweeted, it had already been revealed by the First Minister that Leitch was not fully appraised on the issue when he gave the interview.

Curiously, the story had also appeared in The Times this morning and has been picked up by many other media outlets since. But nobody seemed to be having a go at them.

Will Neil apologise? Will he criticise The Times and the BBC and all the other publications which have picked up the story?

Don't hold your breath...

Scotland is in lockdown. Shops are closing and newspaper sales are falling fast. It’s no exaggeration to say that the future of The National is at stake.
