First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has paid tribute to the Prime Minister during his stay in intensive care.

At a briefing at the Scottish Government's headquarters in Edinburgh, she said the Scottish cabinet wanted to send their best wishes, as well as those of the people of Scotland, to Boris Johnson, his fiancee and his family.

She said: "We are all willing you on Boris."

This afternoon Number 10 gave an update on the PM's condition.

A spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister has been stable overnight and remains in good spirits. He is receiving standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance. He has not required mechanical ventilation or non-invasive respiratory support.”

Addressing the concerns around care home support, the First Minister said the Care Inspectorate watchdog had found that "appropriate procedures" were in place at Castle View Care Home in Dumbarton.

Reports emerged yesterday that eight residents with Covid-19 had died at the home.

Sturgeon added: "The Care Inspectorate will continue to provide advice and support to that home and to others.

"The Scottish Government is working with the inspectorate to understand the broader impact of Covid-19 on the care sector so that we can support health and care workers as much as possible."

Scotland is in lockdown. Shops are closing and newspaper sales are falling fast. It’s no exaggeration to say that the future of The National is at stake.
