IAN Murray has been appointed the shadow secretary of state for Scotland as new Labour leader Keir Starmer set out his frontbench team.

The Edinburgh South MP resigned from the position in June 2016 over disagreements with Jeremy Corbyn following the Brexit referendum.

Following the Conservative victory in December's General Election, he is once again Labour's only MP north of the border.

Murray ran in the election for Labour's deputy leadership, which was also announced on Saturday.

He secured 13.3% of votes from party members and supporters during the first round, with Angela Rayner ultimately being elected from among the five MPs running for the position.

Murray takes over as shadow Scottish secretary from Tony Lloyd, the Labour MP for Rochdale.

The Westminster role involves scrutiny of the Scotland Office and the Secretary of State for Scotland - currently Alister Jack.

Other MPs returning to the shadow cabinet include Ed Miliband as shadow business secretary.

Starmer's shadow cabinet also includes his former leadership rivals Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy and Emily Thornberry.
