KEIR Starmer has overhauled Labour's shadow cabinet, ousting some of Jeremy Corbyn's most loyal supporters.

The party's new chief also handed one of the biggest jobs to his defeated leadership rival Lisa Nandy.

He promised his new top team would be a "responsible opposition that supports the government where we believe they are right and challenge them when we believe mistakes are being made.”

Anneliese Dodds becomes the new shadow chancellor, replacing John McDonnell who stood down with Jeremy Corbyn.

Nandy is to be shadow foreign secretary.

Emily Thornberry, who held that role previously is to stay in Labour's front bench, with details of her new post expected tomorrow.

Nick Thomas-Symonds will be shadow home secretary, while Rachel Reeves will become shadow cabinet office minister.

Jonathan Ashworth will remain as shadow health secretary and Angela Rayner, who was elected deputy on Saturday, has been named party chair.

In a statement, Starmer said: “We are living through a national emergency. Under my leadership, the Labour Party will always act in the country’s interest to save lives and protect livelihoods. That will be the number one priority of my shadow cabinet.

“We will be a responsible opposition that supports the government where we believe they are right and challenge them when we believe mistakes are being made.”

Starmer replaced Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday after securing 56% of the 490,731 votes cast in the three-month contest - beating Nandy and  Rebecca Long-Bailey.
