MOST of us will have heard the proverb "necessity is the mother of invention". But we have perhaps never had to put that into action until now. With life as we know it at a standstill, it’s amazing the variety of activities that sportspeople have created to keep the public fit, healthy and entertained.

Scottish Golf is a case in point with its Virtual Golf Sixes Challenge, which us being run online and is aimed at the younger generation. They have a different task each day to engage children while they are stuck at home, encouraging them to become creative with a drawing challenge which includes designing a club logo, golf bag and a challenging par-three for a golf course – with a prize at the end of every day.

Celebrities have also got in on the act and many are offering free online support – Carol Vorderman for maths to keep their brain active and Joe Wicks for their body and soul.

For the more mature people stuck at home, of which I am one, you can find lots of opportunities to stay fit just by having a scroll through YouTube.

I’m a member of The Hive in Paisley, which is aimed at women who don’t necessarily feel comfortable in a gym setting. Angela Duffy, the brains behind this, has created a space where women of all ages feel comfortable and can exercise at their own pace, with their friends, without feeling judged. As always, the mental health side of keeping fit is important and the friendships made and fun and laughter shared are a big part of The Hive.

So it was with a sigh of relief that we all signed up to the online classes that Angie had worked on tirelessly to ensure everyone has an opportunity to stay active while at home. After the first workout, which wasn’t without its challenges as not everyone is familiar with technology, we all stayed online and had a catch-up. This connection is what is important, particularly for people who may live on their own and are separated from their loved ones.

Keeping active, fit and healthy both physically and mentally during this very worrying time is extremely important and good mental health is key. So please find something that suits you and dance like no-one is watching – it’s good for the soul.
