A PAIR of teenagers have been charged with starting a fire at an Edinburgh school, police said.
The two 16-year-olds have been arrested and charged with wilful fireraising in connection with a blaze at Wester Hailes Education Centre on Friday evening.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to tackle the fire at the centre at 8.04pm.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said the blaze was located inside a cupboard in the school and left the building "heavily smoke-damaged".
Fire crews from seven appliances spent four hours at the scene, although no casualties were reported.
On Sunday morning, Police Scotland announced that the two teenage boys have been charged and are due to appear in court on Monday.
A statement from the force said: "Police can confirm that two 16-year-old male youths have been charged in connection with wilful fire-raising in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh.
"They were both charged with a fire on Murrayburn Drive that was reported around 8pm on Friday March 13.
"A report will be submitted to procurator fiscal and they will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday March 16."
Police say they are still investigating three other incidents which took place in the Wester Hailes area on Friday evening - another fire and two alleged assaults.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 3544 of March 13.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
