THE number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Scotland has risen to 60, the Scottish Government has announced.

It's an increase of 24 cases after the number stood at 36 yesterday.

The news comes after the First Minister warned mass gatherings of more than 500 people will be banned as of Monday.

At First Minister's Questions, Nicola Sturgeon said it is "inappropriate that we continue as normal".

The news came as the UK Government announced its number of cases had risen to 590.

The Scottish Government is not recommending that schools or universities close but Sturgeon said earlier it would be "kept under constant review".

The Scottish Government's national clinical director Jason Leitch had previously said community transmission of Covid-19 - when the source of the transfer could not be traced - would be a "trigger" for the move from the contain phase to the delay phase.

Sturgeon pledged any additional money coming to Scotland's NHS from Wednesday's UK Budget will go towards supporting the health service's efforts to tackle the infection.
