MSPs have voted on nominating Stephen Boyle to be recommended to the Queen to be appointed the next Auditor General.

Subject to formal appointment, Boyle will succeed the current Auditor General, Caroline Gardner, when her term finishes at the end of June this year.

Boyle is currently an audit director at Audit Scotland, leading its central government audit work, including the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body and the European Agricultural Funds Account.

He is also the appointed auditor of the Scottish Police Authority, the Scottish Public Pension Agency and Registers of Scotland.

He said: "It's a huge honour and responsibility to be nominated to succeed Caroline Gardner, and I'm excited and energised by the challenge ahead.

"Independent audit helps ensure Scotland's public services are efficient and effective, and that's particularly important at a time of ongoing pressures on our public bodies."

Ian Leitch, chair of Audit Scotland's Board, said: "The Auditor General for Scotland is a crucial role in Scottish public life. We welcome the Parliament's nomination of the new Auditor General, and the Board and staff at Audit Scotland will provide our full support through this transition to maintain effective scrutiny of public services."

Anas Sarwar, acting convenor of the Public Audit Committee, said: “On behalf of the Public Audit Committee, I would like to congratulate Stephen Boyle on his nomination to be the next Auditor General for Scotland.

"This role plays an essential part in the effective scrutiny of Government and the public sector in Scotland. Our committee has experience of Stephen in his capacity as Audit Director and have every confidence in his ability to manage the vast remit of this vital role.”

He added: “Caroline Gardner still has four more months in post as Scotland’s Auditor General, but our committee will want to place on record its appreciation for her outstanding contribution and public service.  We wish her well for the future.”
