INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day attracts more and more followers each year. And with just one more to go until the 110th anniversary, I am sure those early pioneers who had the foresight to create this day of celebration would be proud of what they started.

Most recently the day has turned into a week of celebration with many different types of events held in the lead up to the day itself.

On Friday, Street Soccer who hosted an Inspired Women lunch in Edinburgh ahead of the official day yesterday. At least three full tables called off over the threat of the coronavirus, but that didn’t stop those who did attend from making the most of their day, giving generously to Street Soccer.

As always, inspiration is never in short supply around this organisation and the work that Sarah Rind does on the Street 45 programme specifically for women was showcased. Sarah herself very eloquently and emotionally told her tale that led her to Street Soccer.

The guest of honour was Mollie Hughes, the youngest woman ever to ski solo from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole. She’s now a double world record holder after becoming the world’s youngest person to climb both the south and north side of Mount Everest in 2017. Listening to her interview was unbelievable; eight days in a white out, temperatures of minus-45c and pulling a 105kg sled. The audience was in disbelief as they listened to the story from this 29-year-old, slight young woman. How she survived the loneliness of this expedition is beyond me, that’s without even thinking about the physical challenges.

Yet the parallels between Mollie and the Street 45 players is very strong. Overcoming adversity, having belief in themselves and powering through when life gets tough. It was definitely inspiration overload!
