THE lawyer of Catalan politician Clara Ponsati has said the suspension of her extradition is “a victory against Spain’s abuse of the rule of law”.

Aamer Anwar posted a video to Twitter containing a short statement outside Edinburgh Sheriff Court after a Scottish sheriff adjourned the case of the St Andrews academic for three months to await a ruling on her immunity as an MEP from European authorities A former Catalan education minister, Ponsati was sought by Spain under a European arrest warrant for her part in the October 2017 independence referendum there.

On Thursday, Sheriff Nigel Ross deferred it until June 18 for the European Parliament to decide if she has immunity from prosecution.

Anwar then gave a short statement outside court.
