A BRITISH tourist on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship has died from coronavirus.

The Japanese Ministry of Health said the man was the sixth person from the ship, which has been quarantined off the country's coast amid the outbreak, to have died.

The death was announced as London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares crashed to its worst week since the depths of the 2008 financial crash and more cases of coronavirus were diagnosed in the UK, including the first in Wales.

The man is the first Briton to have died from coronavirus, also known as Covid-19.

A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Japan and are in contact with local authorities.

"Our sympathies and thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."
