In Westminster, Sajid Javid warned that “the arrangement proposed … would not have been in the national interest".

Javid resigned from the Cabinet after Dominic Cummings and Boris Johnson insisted that the only way to keep his job was to sack his special advisers and replace them with a team approved by Number 10 – in another attempt by Cummings to consolidate power in Whitehall.

She added: "The former Chancellor’s criticism that Number 10’s plan to seize control of the Treasury and to replace all Special Advisers with a pre-approved team was not ‘in the national interest’, raises questions about the terms accepted by the new Chancellor and suggests that Javid believes Boris Johnson's government is not in the national interest.

“It’s clear this dysfunctional and dictatorial government is harming our economy, putting jobs at risk, and damaging people’s livelihoods.

"People in Scotland will rightly be looking on in horror as this Tory UK government puts narrow party interests ahead of those of the UK. “Scotland must have the choice of a better future, as opposed to the broken Westminster system being imposed upon us.”
