YORKSHIRE Tea has been forced to distance itself from the Tories after Chancellor Rishi Sunak posted an image on Twitter.

In a thread that is several tweets long, the well-known brand said it had experienced a “rough weekend” and had “spent the last three days answering furious accusations and boycott calls”.

It added that the brand was not affiliated with any political party.

On Friday, Sunak tweeted: “Quick Budget prep break making tea for the team. Nothing like a good Yorkshire brew.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of the Chancellor with a large bag of Yorkshire Tea.

On Tuesday, the tea firm was forced to release a statement distancing itself from any political party and speaking out against the abuse the Twitter account had received over the weekend.

It was also pointed out that outgoing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also tweeted a picture of himself with the tea in the past.

It said: “So it's been a rough weekend.

“We've spent the last three days answering furious accusations and boycott calls. For some, our tea just being drunk by someone they don't like means it's forever tainted, and they've made sure we know it.

“It's been pretty shocking to see the determination some have had to drag us into a political mudfight.”

It added: “But for anyone about to vent their rage online, even to a company – please remember there's a human on the other end of it, and try to be kind.”
