HARVEY Weinstein has been convicted at his sexual assault trial in New York.

The former Hollywood producer was found guilty of a criminal sex act for assaulting a production assistant at his apartment in 2006. He was also found guilty of third-degree rape against a former aspiring actress.

However, the jury found the former studio boss not guilty on the two most serious counts - predatory sexual assault and first-degree rape.

The jury, made up of seven men and five women, had deliberated for five days.

Overall more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault.

Weinstein pleaded not guilty throughout the case.

Allegations were first made against the producer in 2017 when investigative reporters detailed them in The New York Times and New Yorker.

The landmark article marked the beginning of a global reckoning over sexual misconduct, with a number of high-profile men in the entertainment industry being accused of committing similar crimes.
