SCOTLAND'S Public Finance Minister Kate Forbes jokingly offered to help out the UK Government with their Budget today following the chancellor's resignation.

Amid Boris Johnson's Cabinet reshuffle this morning, Sajid Javid resigned from his post over conditions the Prime Minister had attached to the job.

Javid reported that the Tory leader had told him that staying on would mean firing all of his advisers, which he later said no "self-respecting" minister could do.

As the drama unfolded, there was uncertainty over whether the UK Government will be able to present its Budget on March 11 as planned.

Shortly after, former chief secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak was made the new Chancellor - but there has been no confirmation that the Budget will go ahead next month.

Forbes, who stepped in last minute and delivered the Scottish Budget with mere hours of notice when Derek Mackay resigned as finance secretary amid a texting scandal last week, had the perfect response.

Replying to the BBC's Lewis Goodall, who had tweeted a summary of the Downing Street drama, she said: "Need a hand with the budget? #HappyToHelp"

Forbes became the first woman to deliver the Scottish Budget last week and received cross-party praise for the job.

The Highland MSP was tipped for a Cabinet role and branded a "rising star" in the wake of her performance.
