THE popular nineties sitcom Friends is set for a one-off reunion episode after a 15-year wait for fans.

All six of the main characters will return to the show for a single hour-long episode to be broadcast on HBO Max – an upcoming streaming service.

The episode will mark 25 years of the series which remains popular today. The format has yet to be confirmed, however, reports suggest the episode will be unscripted.

Actors Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc will be paid between $3-4 million by Warner Brothers for the episode.

This isn't the first time a reunion has been considered, with the actors bailing out from plans last year following a pay dispute.

The new episode will help kick off HBO's new streaming service, as it battles amongst the already-established players such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The news has been teased several times by the former Friends cast, with Matthew Perry tweeting "big news coming" on Wednesday.

The original series is currently available to watch on Netflix.
