SCOTTISH Tory interim leader Jackson Carlaw has called for an end to Unionists' "nat-bashing" and "lazy arguments" in his latest Facebook livestream Q&A session.

Answering questions sent in by viewers, he was asked about his policies and plans for Scotland while the country has to "stand still due to a nationalist government".

Carlaw, hoping to dodge the finer details of Scottish independence during the session, said: "You know I don't really want to bash on about the constitution tonight. I think we could all get very, very fed up with that.

"If I am against indyref2 its because I want to be for something else and I want to be able to argue for a better future for Scotland because sadly, at the moment, the reality is every public service in Scotland going into the 2020s is in the worst position than it was coming out of the last decade."

He described many of the arguments for keeping Scotland in the Union as "awfully lazy" and called for Unionists to consider what the Union can bring to Scotland in the next 50 years.

The National:

He argued that the Union was the only way for Scotland to tackle climate change "meaningfully" because Scottish scientists working with UK scientists would be a "much more powerful voice".

The former Remainer switched to a pro-Brexit stance last year. In doing so, he supported the departure of the UK from, among other things, the European science community.

Carlaw urged people not to look to the history of the UK armed forces but instead explore the "good" that they are doing across the world now. He reminded viewers that an independent Scotland would mean we are not part of that establishment any more.

He concluded: "So far fewer of the old lazy arguments, and yes, strong on the Union and standing up against indyref2 – but not just nat-bashing in this – let's be against indyref2 so we can be for something else as well."
