AN independence music festival is set to be held in Oban this summer, with plans already under way by local activists.

Ruth Barratt, convener of Grassroots Oban for Independence, said the group had decided to organise a music festival for Yes. She said: “We are in the very early stages and I’m writing to various people and organisations to gauge what level of support and involvement we may get.

“We intend to promote the festival across the whole of Scotland, encouraging families and individuals alike to come together to enjoy a large indy gathering, encourage each other and gain confidence and skills for the campaign ahead at the same time as enjoying some of the best independence music Scotland has to offer.”

As well as bands there will be sessions with speakers from indy groups and bloggers and leading politicians.

The group has provisionally booked the biggest hall complex in Oban for the weekend of August 14-16. It has not been decided whether it will be one of the days or the whole weekend, and in any case the group hopes to encourage local pubs to have live bands during the weekend so that local businesses benefit from the event too.

Barratt added: “Accommodation in Oban fills up fast during the holiday season so advertising early, if the event is to go ahead, is vital. I’m also looking for a suitable family festival campsite. We could do with a local indy-supporting farmer.”
